Slinkachu
Slinkachu was born in Devon, England in 1979. The 37 year old photographer is most famous for "abandoning" his miniature figures around cities and other landscapes creating a miniature world effect. Slinkachu has been doing this work since 2006, and his work embodies elements of street art, sculpture, installation art and photography. His images have been collected in three best-selling art books; Little People in the City, Big Bad City and Global Model Village that have collectively sold over 300,000 copies worldwide. The artist creates these pictures by using small figures and putting them next to ordinary size objects. For example, one of his most famous pictures created is a bunch of small figures playing tug o' war on a £10 note.
Tug of war, 2014
You can find this picture and many more similar ones on his website. In this photo you can see 2 sets of people playing tug o' war with a £10 note. He has used miniature figures to create the effect of real life people fighting over an over sized £10 note. You can see a slight rip in the middle of the note which gives the effect of the money breaking. One set of people seem to be in suits and ties whereas the other group of people are dressed in ordinary casual clothes. Maybe this links to the idea on corruptness in the people who are more well paid. This is symbolized by a game of tug o' war on the money. This also links to the worlds financial crash as well because it shows people being almost desperate for money and fighting over it.
To create this image, Slinkachu has carefully arranged two sets of mini figures on either side of the note. This is a very simple picture to create however it creates quite an unique effect. |
Toy soldiers
In this part of my project, I have used the ideas of Slinkachu by using small figures to create a life like scene. I used some toy soldiers that I used to play with when I was younger and made a scenario where a group of soldiers have shot down and enemy. I kept the soldiers in one place and used a solid back drop to create the effect that these soldiers are toys and not actually real. I took 20 or so pictures from different angles and perspectives so the scene can be viewed in many different ways. My next step is to put some of these images in photoshop and create more stronger pictures. I could maybe add some gunblast effects to make it look like I have captured the moment of the gun being fired. On the more aerial pictures I could add a tilt shift effect to make the figures look more toy like.
What to do next?:
For my next photoshoot I want to put the figures into a more suited environment. In my previous photoshoot, it is quite clear that the figures are in a bedroom and look like toys. However if I put the toys into an environment which is more realistic such as a forest it would make the figures look more realistic.
